Sproutside at the Flint Children's Museum

To inspire a love for learning and awaken imagination through exploration and hands on play.

on July 10, 2012

Darren Bagley, our local bug expert from MSU, brought some really neat bugs to show the kids today. The bugs are from the Flint River watershed. Darren will be here the rest of the afternoon if you still want to see some cool critters!

This is a little girl crayfish, isn’t she cute?

We found lots of these little guys. It is going to grow up to be a damselfly.

Kids can come hunt through the algae for these bugs, then try to identify them using a dichotomous key. Lots of cool science at the museum today!

Hi Taylor, great question! The little bug on the spoon is a baby damselfly. They can be found all over in local ponds and lakes. You can read more about them here, and see pictures of what adult damselflies look like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damselfly.
